I’m going on a trip with my camera soon, and I’m trying to get back into the habit of, um, using it.
I don’t really know that much about photography, and I’d love to know more about the theory and mechanics behind lenses and aperture stops, when to use (and when not to use) different kinds of equipment, maybe even some tips on great bang-for-buck gear. All of the resources I’ve found are either dry, stiff textbooks or amateur-hour video tutorials.
I guess what I’m asking is, is there a Put This On for photography?

Secure the shadow, ‘ere the substance fade.
19th-century post-mortem photography advertising slogan.
(I went to a guest lecture this morning about how CGI lets us re-animate the dead in film. Another great tidbit: “casting by Forest Lawn Casting Agency.”)
